    Early life

Desi Arnaz was born Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III on March 2, 1917, in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.

He came from a prominent Cuban family, with his father serving as the mayor of Santiago de Cuba. However, political unrest forced the family to flee Cuba in 1933, settling in Miami, Florida.

After arriving in the United States, Arnaz pursued his passion for music. He quickly established himself as a talented guitarist and drummer before joining Xavier Cugat’s orchestra, where he gained valuable experience as a professional musician.

    Career breakthrough

Arnaz’s breakthrough came in 1939 when he appeared in the Broadway musical Too Many Girls. During the production, he met actress Lucille Ball, whom he married in 1940.

Although he appeared in several Hollywood films during the 1940s, his career reached new heights after he and Ball created their own television production company.

    Success with I Love Lucy

In 1951, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball launched I Love Lucy, one of the most influential sitcoms in television history.

Arnaz starred as Ricky Ricardo, a Cuban bandleader married to Lucy Ricardo, played by Ball. His bilingual character helped introduce Hispanic representation to mainstream American television.

The series ran from 1951 to 1957 and consistently ranked among the highest-rated television programs in the United States. Its blend of comedy, music, and innovative production techniques transformed the sitcom genre.

Arnaz later reprised the role in The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, which aired from 1957 to 1960.

    Desilu Productions

Perhaps Arnaz’s greatest achievement came behind the scenes.

In 1950, he and Lucille Ball founded Desilu Productions, initially to produce I Love Lucy. Arnaz managed the company’s business operations while Ball focused on creative decisions.

One of his smartest business moves was insisting that I Love Lucy be filmed on high-quality 35mm film instead of kinescope recordings. In exchange for accepting lower salaries, Arnaz and Ball negotiated ownership of the show’s film negatives and syndication rights.

The decision proved revolutionary. As reruns became immensely popular, ownership of the episodes generated enormous long-term profits.

In 1957, CBS purchased the rights to the show’s first 180 episodes for $4.5 million, allowing Desilu to acquire the former RKO Studios for approximately $6 million.

Under Arnaz and Ball’s leadership, Desilu became one of Hollywood’s biggest production companies, producing successful television series including:

    • The Untouchables
    • The Ann Sothern Show
    • The Lucy Show
    • The Mothers-In-Law

The studio also served as the production home for iconic series such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Andy Griffith Show, and My Three Sons.

After the couple divorced in 1960, Ball purchased Arnaz’s ownership stake in the company for $2.5 million. She later expanded the studio, green-lighting classics such as Star Trek and Mission: Impossible before selling Desilu to Gulf+Western in 1967.

    Music career

Long before television fame, Arnaz had built a successful music career.

He led the Desi Arnaz Orchestra, popularizing Latin music in the United States. His energetic performances and signature song “Babalu” became closely associated with his career and remained audience favorites throughout his life.

    Awards

Arnaz received numerous honors during his career.

In 1956, he shared a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Show for I Love Lucy. He also received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, recognizing his contributions to both television and motion pictures.

Today, he is widely credited as one of the pioneers of modern television production.

    Personal life

Desi Arnaz married Lucille Ball in 1940, and together they had two children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.

Although the couple divorced in 1960, they maintained a close friendship for the remainder of Arnaz’s life.

He later married Edith Mack Hirsch, with whom he remained until her death.

    Death

Desi Arnaz died on December 2, 1986, at the age of 69 after battling lung cancer.
