Dr Sarah Nyendwoha Ntiro has died at the age of 92.

Dr Ntiro died on Monday evening on her way to hospital, according to family members.

Dr Ntiro was the first woman degree graduate in East and Central Africa. She attained her first Bachelors degree in History from the Oxford University in 1951.

Dr Ntiro studied as a teacher at the Makerere University (then Makerere College) in the late 1940s for three years, after her basic education.

In 1951, she joined Oxford University where graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in History in 1954.

At that time, no tertiary institution in East and Central Africa was offering degree courses, hence making her the first woman to attain a degree in the region.

After her degree, she taught at Kyebambe Girls’ School in Fort Portal, Gayaza High School and Duhaga Junior Secondary School (DJSS) in Hoima. She later resigned from her teaching career in 1958.

Towards the end of 1958 after her resignatio, she married Sam Joseph Ntiro. They had two sons, Joseph Kakindo Ntiro Amooti (1960) and the late Simbo Nyakwera Ntiro Atenyi.

Towards the attainment of Uganda’s independence, she started civic education sessions at the Hoima district headquarters to discuss democracy and elections.

She pioneered Uganda’s Teaching Service Commission in 1965 before it became the Education Service Commission.

She acquired the her doctorate degree courtesy of a honorary doctorate from Spellman College in Atlanta, Georgia.
