Gerry Conway, the influential writer behind some of Marvel Comics’ most iconic characters, has died at the age of 73, the company confirmed on Monday.

In a statement, Marvel paid tribute to Conway as a “gifted writer” whose work was deeply rooted in emotional and moral storytelling. Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Comics and Franchise, described him as a passionate advocate for both the craft and its creators, noting that his legacy would continue to inspire generations of fans and writers.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 10, 1952, Conway began publishing comics at just 16 and quickly rose through the ranks. By 1971, he was writing full superhero stories for Marvel, where he became known for blending traditional superhero narratives with darker, horror-inspired themes.

Among his most enduring contributions was the creation of The Punisher, also known as Frank Castle, a vigilante anti-hero introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man. The character’s tragic backstory and relentless quest for justice made him one of Marvel’s most complex figures. Over the years, The Punisher has been portrayed on screen by actors including Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane, Ray Stevenson and Jon Bernthal.

Conway also co-created Ms. Marvel, later known as Captain Marvel, a character brought to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Brie Larson.

His work extended beyond character creation. Conway wrote one of the most memorable and tragic storylines in Spider-Man history — the death of Gwen Stacy — a narrative that has influenced multiple adaptations, including The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, said Conway’s storytelling brought “real stakes” to the Marvel universe, combining high-stakes action with human emotion. He added that Conway’s influence extended beyond comics into film and television projects, including Werewolf by Night and Daredevil.

Throughout his career, Conway worked on a wide range of Marvel titles, writing for characters including Spider-Man, Iron Man and the Avengers. C. B. Cebulski, Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief, said Conway’s contributions left an “indelible impact” on superhero storytelling.
