President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked Chief Justice David Maraga to get used to the bloggers who he had earlier accused of being “guns for hire.”

Speaking during the Anti-Corruption Conference at the Bomas of Kenya, president Kenyatta poked fun at an irate Maraga.

“I saw you were very angry today especially with a group called the bloggers. We tried to pass a law to stop them from insulting all of us but it was taken to the courts and declared illegal,” Kenyatta said amid laughter.

“Bwana CJ we tried passing some law to help us restrain these people (bloggers) but the court told us it was unconstitutional. Like the rest of us, get used to it,” he added.

The head of state assured Kenyans that the conference will not be another talking-shop on corruption where high sounding promises of action are made but never materialize.

“Today we shall turn the tide in the War Against Corruption; creating the platform for victory against a vice that has impeded our social and economic development as a Nation,” he said.

He also noted that the vice has spread across the country and has become an accepted way of life. To tackle it, he added, there will be increased repatriation of proceeds of crime held outside the country.

This will include extradition of suspects and the receipt of key evidence to support both local and international based cases.

“I wish to reassure all Kenyans that no matter which corner of the globe one hides funds stolen from Kenya, that illicit wealth is no longer beyond the reach of the government of Kenya.

With regards to recovery measures for proceeds of corruption within our borders, we have commenced a number of interventions that have already began to bear fruit.”

Kenyatta also said that all arms of government will work together as investigators and prosecutors take on the vice with renewed zeal.

He also noted that most corruption scandals unearthed in government have been engineered by businesspersons and/or professionals who connive with willing public officials to defraud the government.
