A family was held hostage for hours as a gang ransacked their house and demanded cash and other valuables from them in Kamulu area, Kayole, Nairobi.
The gang of seven seemed to know the family had money from their hotel business that they operate in Chokaa area.
The gang jumped the perimeter wall to the compound on May 15 at 2 am as the family slept. The victims said the assailants were armed with pistols, an AK-47 rifle, and crude weapons when they jumped over the fence to gain access.
They then gained access to the house and tied up the family members, securing their hands and legs, and demanded money.
One of the family members pleaded with the gang to spare them and informed the group there was Sh300,000 located in their hotel at the Lower Chokaa area, few kilometers away.
Determined, the gang ordered two of the accomplices to the hotel to get the money from a safe. The owner of the house provided the keys and passwords to the hotel and safe for their safety.
At the hotel, the gunmen accessed the safe and took the Sh300,000, then called their accomplices, who had remained at the residence, to flee the area.
The gang also grabbed five high-end mobile phones from the victims before fleeing, police said. Police visited the scene and commenced investigations. Police suspect the gang had insider information and efforts to get them are ongoing.
Elsewhere, a passenger was robbed of Sh114,000 while in a commercial vehicle.
The victim was from the Cabannas area and was headed for Sultan Hamud when he was robbed of the cash. He told police that while traveling near the Lukenya area, the four occupants of the said motor vehicle turned out to be robbers and robbed him of the cash and a watch.
He sustained injuries to his neck, chest, legs, and hands. One suspect was arrested for questioning over the incident, police said. A hunt for more suspects is ongoing.
