A 22-year-old hotel employee died after drowning in a swimming pool at a hotel in Diani, Kwale County, on Friday evening.

The incident occurred at Diani Gold Sand International Hotel in Diani, where the deceased, identified as Annaculate Wambugu, was employed as a housekeeper.

According to the hotel’s management, they found one of their employees had drowned in a swimming pool within the hotel compound.

Hotel staff quickly retrieved the victim from the water while he was still alive but unconscious. They immediately began resuscitation efforts and called an ambulance from Diani Beach Hospital.

Medical personnel responded promptly and rushed the victim to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite efforts by medics to save his life, he was pronounced dead, with preliminary reports indicating that he succumbed to oxygen deprivation following the drowning incident.

Police officers from Diani Police Station visited both the hospital and the scene of the incident. Investigations established that the deceased was a resident of the White House area in Ukunda and had been on duty throughout the day before the tragedy occurred.

Preliminary findings suggest that after completing his duties, the employee may have decided to swim in the hotel’s pool during the evening hours, leading to the fatal incident.

The body was transferred to the Msambweni Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the drowning.

Meanwhile, police in Mathioya Sub-County, Murang’a County, launched investigations into the suspected murder of a 76-year-old man whose body was found in a farm near his home.

The body was discovered lying in a farm at Kangui village in Kambara Sub-location.

Police visited the scene and identified the deceased as Leonard Kimani Kamiri, who lived alone.

Police said the body was discovered a few metres from his house by his son, Julius Maina, who had visited his father’s homestead after attending a neighbour’s burial ceremony.

Investigators noted that the deceased had visible injuries on the back of the body, head and left leg, as well as a broken right hand near the shoulder, raising suspicion of a violent attack.

The scene was processed and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
