In South Africa, anyone who owns a television set is legally required to hold a valid TV licence, issued by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). However, if you no longer own a TV or have stopped using one, you can cancel your TV licence. Cancelling it properly ensures you are not billed in the future or face penalties for unpaid licence fees.

    1. Understand When You Can Cancel a TV Licence

You can only cancel your TV licence under specific circumstances. These include selling or giving away your television, your television being stolen or damaged beyond repair, or if you no longer own any TV set. The SABC requires proof to verify your claim before approving the cancellation.

    1. Gather the Required Documents

Before you apply for cancellation, you need to prepare supporting documents. These include:

    • A sworn affidavit stating that you no longer own or use a television set.
    • Proof of disposal, such as a receipt or letter showing that you sold, donated, or scrapped your TV.
    • A police report or case number if your television was stolen.

Having these documents ready helps avoid delays in processing your request.

    1. Write a Cancellation Request

You must write a formal request to the SABC asking for the cancellation of your TV licence. Your letter should include your full name, TV licence account number, ID number, and contact details. Clearly state your reason for cancellation and attach all supporting documents, including your affidavit.

    1. Send Your Request to the SABC

You can send your TV licence cancellation request via email or post.

    • Email your documents to tvlic.info@sabc.co.za.
    • Alternatively, post your request to SABC TV Licences, Private Bag X60, Auckland Park, 2006.

If you prefer in-person service, you can visit an SABC regional office to submit your cancellation documents directly.

    1. Wait for Confirmation from SABC

After submitting your cancellation request, the SABC will review your application and verify your information. If approved, you will receive a confirmation email or letter confirming that your TV licence has been cancelled. Keep this confirmation for your records, as it serves as proof that you no longer owe licence fees.

    1. Pay Any Outstanding Balance

Before your TV licence can be cancelled, you must settle any outstanding balance on your account. If you still owe fees, the SABC will inform you of the amount. Once payment is made, the cancellation can proceed.

    1. Avoid Future Penalties

If you own another television in the future, you will need to apply for a new licence before using it. Continuing to use a TV without a valid licence is an offence under South African law and could result in fines or legal action.
