Peanuts are easy to grow at home and require little space. Though often thought of as nuts, peanuts are actually legumes that grow underground. With the right conditions, you can enjoy harvesting your own fresh peanuts in just a few months, whether in your backyard or in large containers. Here is how to grow peanuts.

    1. Choose the Right Peanuts
Buy raw, untreated peanuts with shells still on. These can be found at garden centers or organic stores. Avoid roasted or salted peanuts, as they won’t sprout. You can also use seed peanuts from a trusted supplier.
    2. Prepare the Soil
Peanuts grow best in loose, sandy, well-drained soil. Avoid heavy clay or soggy ground. Clear the planting area of weeds and mix in compost or aged manure to enrich the soil. The ideal pH is slightly acidic to neutral, around 5.5 to 7.0.
    3. Plant in Warm Weather
Peanuts need warm temperatures to grow. Wait until the soil has warmed to at least 18°C (65°F) and there’s no risk of frost. This usually means late spring or early summer in most regions.
    4. Plant the Seeds Properly
Remove the peanut shells carefully without damaging the seeds inside. Plant each seed about 4–5 cm deep and 15–20 cm apart in rows spaced 60 cm apart. Cover with soil and water lightly.
    5. Water Regularly
Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water the plants regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid overwatering. Peanuts need steady moisture during flowering and pod development.
    6. Watch for Pegging
After the plant flowers, it will form small stems called “pegs” that grow down into the soil. This is where the peanuts will form. Make sure the soil stays loose to allow pegs to penetrate easily.
    7. Control Weeds and Pests
Keep the area around your peanut plants weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients. Monitor for pests like aphids or cutworms, and use natural or chemical methods if needed.
    8. Harvest When Ready
Peanuts are usually ready to harvest 120–150 days after planting. When the leaves start yellowing, gently dig up one plant to check. If the shells are firm and the peanuts inside are mature, it’s time to harvest.
    9. Dry and Store
Pull up the whole plant and shake off excess soil. Let it dry in a warm, airy place for about two weeks. Once dry, remove the peanuts from the plant and store them in a cool, dry place.
