How To Make A Palm Cross

Making a palm cross is a simple yet meaningful tradition often practiced during Palm Sunday in Christian communities. It symbolises Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and serves as a personal reminder of faith. If you have access to palm leaves or similar long, flexible strips like ribbon or dried reeds, you can easily make a palm cross by hand. Here is how to make a palm cross.

1. Prepare Your Palm Leaf
   Start by selecting a long, green palm frond that is about 40 to 60 centimetres long and about 1 to 2 centimetres wide. If your palm leaf is too wide, gently split it lengthwise into a thinner strip. If the leaf is dry or stiff, soak it in warm water for a few minutes to soften it and make it easier to fold.
2. Make the Vertical Part of the Cross
   Hold the palm horizontally and fold the bottom end upward to form the vertical length of the cross. This should be the longest part, so measure how tall you want your cross to be—usually about 10 to 12 centimetres—then make the fold at that height.
3. Create the Crossbar
   Now fold the palm strip to the left, about a third of the way from the top of the vertical piece. This makes one side of the crossbar. Then fold the strip to the right, across the front, to form the other side of the crossbar. Both arms of the cross should be about equal in length.
4. Secure the Folds
   After making the cross shape, wrap the remaining strip around the centre where the two arms intersect. This helps hold the cross together. Wrap it once around the back, then bring it forward and tuck the end into one of the folds. Pull gently to tighten and secure the shape.
5. Adjust and Finish the Cross
   Straighten all the parts of the cross to make sure the vertical and horizontal lines are balanced. Trim the ends neatly if needed. If the palm is fresh, the cross will stay firm once it dries. If using ribbon or dried materials, you may use a small dab of glue to secure the final tuck.
