    Early Life

Jackie Martling was born John Coger “Jackie” Martling Jr. on February 14, 1948, in Mineola, New York, and grew up in a small Long Island village. During his early years, he developed a strong passion for both music and gymnastics.

After graduating from high school, Martling attended Michigan State University, where he studied mechanical engineering. He earned his degree in 1971 and remained in East Lansing for several years after college.

Before comedy became his profession, Jackie worked in construction while also pursuing music. During his university years, he played guitar and sang in local bands, unknowingly laying the foundation for his future entertainment career.

How Jackie Martling Started in Comedy

Jackie initially focused on music before discovering his talent for comedy. After returning to New York, he joined a band called The Off-Hour Rockers, where he began telling jokes between songs during performances.

His comedy career officially took shape in 1976 after attending an open mic event at New York City’s famous Catch a Rising Star comedy club. Encouraged by the venue’s MC, Martling leaned into stand-up comedy full-time.

By the late 1970s, Jackie had developed a signature comedic style that blended dirty jokes with musical performances. Around this period, he crossed paths with comedians including Eddie Murphy, Rob Bartlett, and Bob Nelson.

In 1979, Martling also launched his now-famous “dial-a-joke” hotline, a comedy phone service that became unexpectedly popular and remained active for years.

    Comedy Albums

Martling steadily built his profile through independently released comedy albums. His first record, What Did You Expect?, arrived in 1979 and was self-produced using his own equipment.

    He followed up with:

    • Going Ape! (1980)
    • Normal People Are People You Don’t Know That Well (1981)

His career gained further momentum after Los Angeles radio personality Rick Dees began featuring Jackie’s jokes on-air, helping earn him the nickname “The Joke Man.”

Jackie Martling and The Howard Stern Show

A major turning point in Jackie Martling net worth came through his partnership with Howard Stern.

Their professional relationship began in the early 1980s after Stern heard Martling perform and invited him onto his radio show. Jackie initially appeared as a recurring guest before becoming a permanent fixture.

One of his most memorable contributions was the segment “Stump the Comedian,” where listeners challenged Jackie to complete jokes and deliver punchlines.

By 1985, Martling officially joined The Howard Stern Show as a writer and later became the program’s head comedy writer, contributing jokes for Stern’s broadcasts, television appearances, and special projects.

Jackie Martling’s Salary on The Howard Stern Show

At the height of his career with Howard Stern, Jackie Martling reportedly earned $578,000 annually.

In 2001, he famously left the show after contract negotiations broke down. Jackie reportedly requested a salary increase to $1 million per year, while Stern countered with an offer of $650,000 annually. Unable to agree on terms, Martling chose to walk away from the highly successful radio program.

Despite his departure, he occasionally returned for guest appearances over the years.

    Career After Leaving Howard Stern

Leaving The Howard Stern Show did not mark the end of Jackie’s career.

Martling continued releasing comedy albums, touring as a stand-up comic, and branching into acting. He also launched his own satellite radio program, “Jackie’s Joke Hunt,” allowing him to maintain a strong connection with audiences.

In addition to comedy, Jackie revisited his musical roots by releasing the album Happy Endings and performing live.

His film and television credits include appearances in:

    • The Aristocrats
    • Mail Order Bride
    • White Irish Drinkers
    • Leverage

In 2017, Jackie published his autobiography, The Joke Man: Bow to Stern, offering insight into his rise in comedy and his years alongside Howard Stern.

    Personal Life

Jackie Martling married Nancy Sirianni in 1988. The couple became familiar to fans of The Howard Stern Show, where Nancy occasionally appeared and received support for her music career.

Although Jackie and Nancy divorced in 2008, they reportedly maintained a professional relationship and collaborated on entertainment projects afterward.

    Substance Abuse

Martling has openly discussed his struggles with alcohol dependency. According to Jackie, substance abuse played a role in his decision to leave The Howard Stern Show.

However, he has remained sober since 2001, a milestone he frequently speaks about when reflecting on his career and personal growth.

    Jackie Martling’s Real Estate Portfolio

Martling has invested in real estate over the years, owning properties in Bayville, New York, and Manhattan.

One of his most notable assets is a beachfront Bayville property he purchased in 2000 for $825,000. Due to rising property values, the home is believed to be worth between $2 million and $3 million today.
