Jacob Ryan Trouba, born on February 26, 1994, in Rochester, Michigan, is a professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League.

He is recognized for his physical, shutdown style of play, strong skating, leadership qualities, and willingness to engage physically.

Drafted ninth overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Trouba has built a reputation as a reliable top-pair defenseman and former team captain.

He spent his early career in Winnipeg before being traded to the New York Rangers in 2019, where he served as captain for several seasons before moving to Anaheim in December 2024.

Trouba comes from a hockey-oriented family in Michigan and has balanced his on-ice career with personal interests such as visual art.

Jacob has one younger brother named Chris Trouba, who also plays ice hockey.

Chris most recently competed with the Plattsburgh State Cardinals.

Family plays a central role in Jacob’s life, and he has spoken about prioritizing family decisions during key career moments, including his trade from the Rangers.

    Career

Trouba developed through the United States National Team Development Program before committing to the University of Michigan Wolverines.

In his freshman season with Michigan in 2012-13, he earned First Team All-American honors, was named the CCHA’s Best Offensive Defenseman, and contributed significantly to the team’s success.

He made his NHL debut with the Winnipeg Jets in the 2013-14 season and quickly established himself as a top defenseman known for his physical presence and ability to log heavy minutes.

After six seasons with the Jets, Trouba was traded to the New York Rangers in June 2019.

He signed a seven-year contract with New York and emerged as a leader, serving as an alternate captain before being named the 28th captain in Rangers franchise history in August 2022.

During his time in New York, he helped guide the team to multiple playoff appearances, including deep runs.

On December 6, 2024, the Rangers traded him to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman Urho Vaakanainen and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

With the Ducks, Trouba has continued to provide veteran stability on the blue line while adapting to a new organization.

    Accolades

In 2024, Trouba received the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award, recognizing his exemplary leadership both on and off the ice as well as his community involvement.

He was named captain of the New York Rangers in 2022, becoming only the 12th defenseman in franchise history to wear the “C.”

At the collegiate level, his standout freshman year at Michigan brought him First Team All-American status, CCHA First Team honors, CCHA Best Offensive Defenseman, and the Vic Heyliger Outstanding Defenseman Award.

Internationally, Trouba helped the United States capture gold at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2012 IIHF World Under-18 Championship, where he served as an alternate captain.
