Joseph Patrick Kennedy III, commonly known as Joe Kennedy III, is an American politician, diplomat, and member of the prominent Kennedy family.

Born on October 4, 1980, in Boston, Massachusetts, he is the son of former U.S. Representative Joseph P. Kennedy II and a grandson of U.S. Senator and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.

As part of one of America’s most storied political dynasties, he is also a grandnephew of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Ted Kennedy.

Kennedy grew up in the Boston area, including Brighton and Marshfield, Massachusetts, often spending summers on Cape Cod.

He graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree, served two years in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic, and earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 2009.

In 2020, he challenged incumbent Senator Ed Markey in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate but was unsuccessful.

After leaving Congress, Kennedy served as a CNN commentator and, in 2022, was appointed by President Joe Biden as the U.S. Special Envoy for Northern Ireland for Economic Affairs, a role he held until 2024, focusing on economic development.

He has also served as president of Citizens Energy Corporation, a nonprofit founded by his father to assist low-income families with energy needs, and founded the Groundwork Project to support community organizing in under-resourced areas.
