Julia Görges is a German former professional tennis player born on 2 November 1988 in Bad Oldesloe, Germany.
Known for her powerful serve and aggressive baseline game, she preferred hard and grass courts, with the Australian Open among her favorite events.
Growing up, her tennis idol was Martina Hingis, and she was also a fan of Roger Federer. She began playing tennis around the age of five when her parents took her to a local club.
Görges turned professional in 2005 and announced her retirement from the sport on 21 October 2020, shortly before her 32nd birthday, after a final appearance at the French Open.
Siblings
Julia has one elder maternal half-sister named Maike.
Like their parents Klaus and Inge Görges, who both worked in insurance, Maike also pursued a career in the insurance industry.
Career
Görges entered the professional ranks in 2005 and first broke into the WTA top 100 in June 2008.
Her early years were spent largely on the ITF Circuit, where she collected multiple titles before making her mark on the main tour.
Her first WTA singles title came in 2010 at Bad Gastein.
The following year, she captured the prestigious Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, defeating then-world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the final.

After periods of steady progress and occasional setbacks, her form surged in the late 2010s.
In 2017, she won the Kremlin Cup in Moscow and the year-end WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai.
She added further titles in Auckland and Luxembourg in 2018, then successfully defended her Auckland crown in 2019.
Her career-best Grand Slam result arrived at Wimbledon in 2018, when she reached the semifinals.
She also advanced to the fourth round of several majors on multiple occasions.
Görges reached the mixed-doubles final at the 2014 French Open alongside Nenad Zimonjić.
In doubles, she achieved two Australian Open semifinals and a Wimbledon semifinal.
Görges represented Germany in Fed Cup and competed at the Olympics.
She retired with a strong overall singles record and more than $9.9 million in career prize money.
Accolades
Over her professional career, Görges won seven WTA Tour singles titles and five doubles titles, along with six singles and six doubles titles on the ITF Circuit.
Her highest singles ranking was world No. 9, achieved on 20 August 2018. She peaked at No. 12 in doubles on 22 August 2016.
Notable individual achievements include the 2017 WTA Elite Trophy, the 2011 Stuttgart title against the top-ranked player, and the 2018 Wimbledon singles semifinal.
She also reached a Grand Slam mixed-doubles final and multiple women’s doubles semifinals at majors.
