    Early Life

Karen Valencia Clark was born on November 15, 1960, in Detroit, Michigan.

She grew up in one of gospel music’s most influential families. Her mother, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, was a pioneering gospel choir director, arranger and educator who helped transform the sound of church choirs.

Karen was the youngest of the Clark children. She grew up alongside her sisters Jacky, Denise, Twinkie and Dorinda, with music playing a central role in the family.

The sisters received extensive musical training under their mother’s direction. Twinkie Clark eventually became the family’s principal songwriter and arranger, while Karen developed into one of its most distinctive vocalists.

The Clark Sisters emerged as a professional gospel group during the 1970s and eventually became one of the most influential female groups in gospel music.

Their music combined traditional church harmonies with contemporary production, funk, soul and R&B influences.

One of their biggest breakthroughs came with the 1983 song “You Brought the Sunshine.” The recording became a signature hit and demonstrated that gospel music could reach audiences beyond traditional church settings.

Karen’s voice became one of the defining features of the group.

Her high register, vocal runs and improvisational style gave the Clark Sisters’ recordings a distinctive sound. Her performances also helped influence later generations of gospel, R&B and pop singers.

The group’s influence continued decades after its initial success. Their 2007 live project, “Live… One Last Time,” became a major comeback and earned Grammy recognition.

Karen also wrote and led “Blessed & Highly Favored,” one of the group’s most celebrated later songs.

    Solo Career

Karen Clark Sheard launched her solo career in 1997 with the album “Finally Karen.”

The project became a major success in gospel music and demonstrated that she could establish herself independently while maintaining the musical traditions associated with the Clark Sisters.

The album also earned Grammy recognition and several Stellar Awards.

She followed it with “2nd Chance” in 2002 and “The Heavens Are Telling” in 2003. In 2006, she released “It’s Not Over.”

Her later projects included “All in One” in 2010, “Destined to Win” in 2015 and “Still Karen” in 2024.

Throughout her solo career, Sheard has combined live worship, contemporary gospel, traditional church music and collaborations with members of her family.

She has won four Grammy Awards and received numerous Grammy nominations. Her honors include recognition for her work with the Clark Sisters and her songwriting and performances as a solo artist.

She has also received Stellar Awards and GMA Dove Awards.

Her influence, however, goes beyond awards.

    Karew Records

Karen Clark Sheard has also expanded her career into the music business.

She and her husband, Bishop J. Drew Sheard, established Karew Records in 2009.

The family-owned label has been associated with music from Karen, the Clark Sisters, Kierra Sheard and other artists.

For Sheard, the company has provided a way to combine business with her family’s musical legacy while maintaining greater creative control over their projects.

    Television and Ministry

Sheard has also appeared on television.

She was featured in the BET docu-series “The Sheards,” which followed her family’s music, ministry and personal life.

The program gave audiences a closer look at her different roles as a gospel performer, mother, wife, businesswoman and church leader.

Her ministry has remained an important part of her career. Together with her husband, she has been involved in church leadership while continuing to perform and record music.

    Personal Life

Karen Clark Sheard is married to Bishop J. Drew Sheard, a prominent Church of God in Christ leader.

The couple have two children, gospel singer and actress Kierra Sheard and producer-musician J. Drew Sheard II.

Kierra has followed her mother’s path into gospel music, and the two have collaborated on several musical projects.

Family has remained central to Karen’s life and career. She began singing with her sisters under the direction of her mother and later continued the family’s musical tradition with her own children.
