Kenya has officially launched kidney transplant services at the Kenya University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), marking a major step forward in the country’s healthcare system.

The hospital successfully conducted its first two kidney transplants on May 7 and 8, 2025. According to officials, both donors and recipients are in stable condition and recovering well.

During the official launch on Friday, Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga said the achievement makes KUTRRH a growing centre for renal care in the country.

“This milestone reflects our commitment to expanding specialized healthcare services locally and reducing dependence on overseas treatment,” Dr. Oluga said.

The launch of the kidney transplant program follows three years of preparation. This included training Kenyan medical staff at Apollo Hospital in India, buying modern equipment, and building partnerships with other institutions.

The surgeries were conducted in collaboration with kidney specialists from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), who will continue to guide and mentor the team at KUTRRH.

Dr. Oluga added that one more donor-recipient pair is ready for the next transplant, and eight others are currently being evaluated at the transplant clinic.

The kidney transplant services are supported by the Social Health Authority (SHA), helping to lower treatment costs for patients and support the government’s goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage.
