KFS Invites Public Views on Proposed Airstrip at Upper Imenti Forest

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has invited members of the public and stakeholders to submit views on a proposal to construct an airstrip and related infrastructure at Upper Imenti Forest in Meru County.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, KFS said the project, which will be located at the Meru Forest Station, is intended to improve aviation access for forest management operations, emergency response and regional economic development.

According to the Service, preliminary site surveys and wind assessments have established that the proposed location is suitable for the project. The airstrip and ancillary facilities are expected to occupy approximately 11 hectares.

KFS said the selected site is characterised by sparse vegetation cover, and the project is therefore expected to cause minimal ecological disruption.

“In compliance with the Constitution of Kenya, relevant statutory laws, regulations and guidelines on public participation, the Kenya Forest Service invites members of the public and other stakeholders to submit their views, comments, concerns and recommendations regarding the proposed construction of an airstrip including the runway, apron and ancillary infrastructure,” the notice stated.

Stakeholders have been asked to submit their written comments to the County Forest Conservator’s Office in Meru Town or download the public participation questionnaire from the KFS website, www.kenyaforestservice.org, and submit it physically or through the email address director@kenyaforestservice.org.

KFS said all submissions must be received on or before July 21, 2026.

The proposed development, which is also linked to the construction of a State Lodge, has generated significant public debate. Environmental groups and conservationists have raised concerns that the project could threaten elephant habitats and affect biodiversity within the forest ecosystem.

Construction activities reportedly began in mid-2026 before the completion of formal public consultations, triggering opposition from some local residents and conservation advocates. The Meru Environment and Land Court subsequently issued orders suspending the project, although reports indicated that tree-clearing activities continued under heightened security.

Several court cases challenging the development of the forest remain active. Both KFS and Forestry Principal Secretary Gitonga Mugambi have previously stated that they will abide by the final determination of the courts regarding the project.
