Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) Chairperson, Kagwiria Mbogori has condemned the actions of the NGO board’s Fazul Mahamed.

She termed the actions as a direct attack on human rights groups and that the board was acting in contempt of court from orders that were issued in October 2016.

The commission cited various occasions when human rights defenders and organizations were attacked for questioning the government actions in relation to gross human rights violations.

She made reference to the attack on IFES, MUHURI and Haki Africa.

Ms. Kagwiria said that the commission commends the directive of Acting Cs Matiang’i on  forming a committee to work closely with the NGO board.

The commission termed the NGO board as illegal and that it was operating contrary to article 115(2) of the constitution.

They asked the CS to operationalize the Public Benefits Organisations Act 2013 stating that failure of the above would increase uncertainty. The commission also joined the legal society of Kenya in reminding the CS on the consequences of defying the court order to  operationalise the PBO act.

KNCHR said that the commission of administrative Justice already established that Fazul was unfit to hold office yet he continued to be in office.

Fazul has in two days deregistered KHRC and called for the arrest of AfriCOG officials and members.
