Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has dismissed reports regarding the death of Dr. Daniel Ndege Chacha, a University of Nairobi Medical Registrar attached to its Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department.

In a statement, KNH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Evanson Kamuri said Dr. Chacha was referred to the hospital from Kitengela on Monday, March 10, 2025, in critical condition.

Upon arrival, he was admitted to the Accident and Emergency Department, where doctors diagnosed him with severe liver and kidney complications.

“Despite not being registered with the Social Health Authority (SHA), KNH expedited his registration and ensured he received urgent medical care,” the statement read.

A team of specialists, including liver and kidney experts, worked to stabilize his condition, but his health deteriorated, requiring admission to the Critical Care Unit.

Despite all medical efforts, he passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025, and his family was immediately informed.

Addressing claims by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) that KNH had detained Dr. Chacha’s body over an unpaid bill, Dr. Kamuri stated that his remains were released from the hospital’s Farewell Home and transported to Migori County on Saturday, March 15, 2025.

KMPDU Deputy Secretary General Dennis Miskellah had earlier alleged that Dr. Chacha first sought treatment at KNH but was turned away for lacking an active medical cover.

He claimed the total bill amounted to about Sh300,000, but SHA covered only Sh30,000.
