Key officials of Anne Waiguru’s Devolution ministry have reportedly misappropriated Ksh 50 million which was donated by musician Akon to help in put up lights in the Kibera slum. Key individuals in the ministry have reportedly lined their pockets with the money while only putting up just 10 lights while other amounts cannot be accounted for.
The running of the project is also drawing criticism as youths working on the project were promised up to Ksh 1,000 in allowances but the much they have been paid is just Ksh 470. Akon’s donation through the office of the president was not suppose to cater for such fees but is listed as being used to pay for daily allowance of people doing manual work in the State House backed project.
The project which has seen the government allocate a mysterious Ksh 500 million for it, is expected to incite the residents against former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and any of his associates. There are also questions being raised by local leaders on the Ksh 500 million allocation as key officials in the ministry cannot properly account for the money already listed as used from the kitty.
The Kibera sprucing up project is being run under the Devolution Ministry which is headed by Anne Waiguru. Ms Waiguru is known to have been previously involved with President Uhuru Kenyatta in a romantic way. She is also rumoured to have 3 children sired by the President. Questions are being asked why the sprucing up of Kibera is so urgent while there are no allocations for Mukuru, Kiambio, Dandora, Mathare and other slums around Nairobi.
