    Early Life

Lawrence Kasdan was born on January 14, 1949, in Miami Beach, Florida, to Jewish parents Sylvia and Clarence Kasdan. He grew up primarily in Morgantown and Wheeling, West Virginia, alongside his siblings, including his brother Mark Kasdan, who would also become a filmmaker.

Kasdan’s childhood was marked by financial challenges, and he often found refuge in movies. Influenced by filmmakers such as David Lean and John Sturges, he developed a passion for storytelling that would shape his future career.

After graduating from Morgantown High School in 1966, he attended the University of Michigan, where he won the prestigious Hopwood Award multiple times for his writing. Although he briefly attended a writing program in Los Angeles, he eventually returned to Michigan and earned a master’s degree in education in 1971.

    Early Career Struggles

Before finding success in Hollywood, Kasdan worked a variety of jobs. He originally hoped to become a high school English teacher but struggled to find employment in the field.

Instead, he took a position as an advertising copywriter in Detroit. While the work was not particularly fulfilling, it sharpened his writing skills and earned him several industry awards.

During this period, Kasdan continued developing screenplays, determined to break into the film business.

    Breakthrough with Star Wars

Kasdan’s Hollywood breakthrough came when he was hired to work on the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back.

Released in 1980, the film became the highest-grossing movie of the year and remains one of the most celebrated entries in the Star Wars franchise. Kasdan’s contributions helped elevate the film’s storytelling and character development, earning him widespread recognition.

He later returned to the franchise to co-write:

    • Return of the Jedi (1983)
    • Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
    • Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

These projects collectively generated billions of dollars at the global box office and played a major role in building Kasdan’s wealth.

Raiders of the Lost Ark and Hollywood Success

Between his Star Wars projects, Kasdan wrote the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford, the film became the highest-grossing movie of 1981 and launched the immensely successful Indiana Jones franchise.

The success of Raiders of the Lost Ark established Kasdan as one of Hollywood’s premier screenwriters and opened the door to future directing opportunities.

    Directing Career

Kasdan made his directorial debut with Body Heat in 1981, a neo-noir thriller that quickly gained a reputation as a modern classic.

He followed it with the acclaimed ensemble drama:

    The Big Chill (1983)

Co-written with Barbara Benedek, The Big Chill became one of the defining films of the 1980s.

The movie earned Kasdan an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and won the Writers Guild of America Award.

    Silverado (1985)

Kasdan reunited with his brother Mark to co-write the screenplay for the Western Silverado, which has since become a fan favorite in the genre.

    The Accidental Tourist (1988)

Based on the novel by Anne Tyler, The Accidental Tourist starred William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, and Geena Davis.

The film was both a critical and commercial success and earned Kasdan Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

    Grand Canyon (1991)

Kasdan co-wrote Grand Canyon with his wife Mary Kasdan and directed the film. The screenplay earned another Academy Award nomination, bringing his total Oscar nominations to four.

    The Bodyguard

Although Kasdan originally wrote The Bodyguard screenplay in 1975, the film was not produced until 1992.

Starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, the movie became a massive global success.

Its soundtrack became one of the best-selling albums of all time, while the film itself generated significant box office revenue and further boosted Kasdan’s earnings.

    Later Projects

Kasdan continued directing and writing throughout the 1990s and 2000s, with projects including:

    • French Kiss
    • Mumford
    • Dreamcatcher
    • Darling Companion

While not all of these films achieved commercial success, they helped maintain Kasdan’s presence as an active filmmaker.

    Television and Light & Magic

In 2022, Kasdan directed the Disney+ documentary series:

    Light & Magic

The series explored the history of Industrial Light & Magic, the visual-effects powerhouse founded by George Lucas.

The documentary received strong reviews and marked one of Kasdan’s most notable television projects.

    Personal Life

Kasdan married Mary Goldman in 1971 after the two met at the University of Michigan.

    The couple has two sons:

    • Jake Kasdan
    • Jonathan Kasdan

Both sons have followed successful careers in the film industry, making filmmaking a family tradition.

    Real Estate

One of Kasdan’s most notable real estate investments came in 1985 when he and his wife purchased a Beverly Hills mansion for approximately $2.8 million.

The property spans roughly 7,000 square feet and is now estimated to be worth between $14 million and $16 million, reflecting the dramatic appreciation of luxury Southern California real estate over the decades.
