Kenya’s plans to send a strong squad to the forthcoming World Volleyball Championship in Japan has been thrown into a spin thanks a “pregnancy bug” that has hit Malkia Strikers’ camp.

According to reports, a number of core members of the team, which is currently in camp ahead of the global showpiece slated for next month, are either expectant of just recently left maternity wards.

Leading the pack is Japan-trained long-serving skipper Braxcides Agala, who welcomed her fourth-born child in May.

In what appears as a rivalry of captains, former Kenya Pipeline captain Ruth Jeng’etich also welcomed her first born in the same month.

Right attacker Lydia Maiyo, libero Elizabeth Wanyama and Esther Wangeci also missed the squad after giving birth late last year.

Kenya Pipeline’s Mildred Odwako, Kenya Prisons’ Esther Mwonge and Elishebah Chepkemboi are all out expectant.

Some junior members of the team like Esther Simiyu and Florida Juma are also expectant and will miss the trip to Japan.

Injury has also robbed the coach Japheth Munala’s side players like Everline Makuto, Loice Jepkosgei and Esther Mwombe, who is yet to fully recover from a knee surgery.

Kenya is pooled in Group D of the competition that will run from 29 September to 20 October alongside Brazil, Serbia, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Kazakhstan.
