Police in Meru County arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with a suspected murder incident reported in Imenti Central Sub-County.
According to police, the incident was reported on Friday, April 24, 2026 after members of the public discovered blood stains and what appeared to be human brain matter by the roadside near Mariara Bridge along the Mate Road.
Police visited the scene at Duruma Location, Nkandone Sub-location and found a suspect attempting to retrieve a blue motorcycle believed to be linked to the incident. He was immediately arrested.
During interrogation, the suspect told investigators that he had been riding the motorcycle from Mitunguu towards Chaaria at around 3:00 a.m. in the company of one Samuel Muriithi.
He claimed they were being pursued by unknown individuals on another motorcycle and, while speeding, lost control at a sharp corner near Mariara Bridge, resulting in an accident.
The suspect alleged that Muriithi sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
He further claimed that he dragged the body and dumped it into River Mariara before leaving, changing clothes at his residence, and later returning to recover the motorcycle.
At the scene, officers observed significant blood stains and suspected human brain matter near the motorcycle, raising questions over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A search at the suspect’s residence led to the recovery of clothes believed to have been worn during the incident.
The garments, stained with blood and mud, were preserved as exhibits.
The scene was processed and documented, while the motorcycle was towed to Gaitu Police Station and secured as evidence. The suspect remains in police custody pending further investigations.
Efforts to retrieve the body from River Mariara went on, with assistance from the Meru County emergency rescue team.
Police said investigations are continuing to establish the exact sequence of events and determine whether the case involves foul play beyond the suspect’s account.
