Ongoing multi-agency security operations in Tana River County have recorded another breakthrough following the voluntary surrender of two illegally held firearms and several rounds of ammunition in Tana North Sub-County.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said the firearms were surrendered in Merti and Bilbil sub-locations as security agencies continue efforts to recover illegal weapons and improve security in the region.
Police attributed the latest recovery to sustained collaboration between the local administration, members of the public and security agencies under the ongoing disarmament exercise.
The development comes days after residents in Tana North and Bangale sub-counties voluntarily surrendered three serviceable AK-47 rifles and 21 rounds of ammunition as part of the same operation.
According to the NPS, the recoveries are the result of continued multi-agency security operations and community engagement initiatives aimed at curbing the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons, enhancing regional security and promoting peaceful coexistence.
The police commended residents who have voluntarily surrendered illegal firearms, describing the move as a demonstration of patriotism and commitment to lasting peace.
“The National Police Service commends the continued cooperation of members of the public and urges all persons in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily to security agencies,” the statement said.
The NPS further appealed to members of the public to continue supporting security operations by sharing information on illegal firearms and other criminal activities.
