Officers drawn from the Kenya Wildlife Services are currently fighting a fire outbreak at Chogoria area in Mt Kenya.

The inferno is said to have broke out on Saturday 23, around a campsite near Chogoria.

However, the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

In a statement on Sunday, KWS said it had rescued visitors who were still trapped in the area.

“All visitors who had been trapped on Mt Kenya during a fire outbreak have been safely evacuated,” KWS posted on Twitter.

According to KWS, the rescue operation was conducted by a multi agency team drawn from Kenya Forest Services (KFS), Mount Kenya Trust (MKT) and Rhino Ark Foundation.

The KWS, however, reported that some areas were still on fire and it was employing all means to contain it.

“We plan to do another aerial surveillance this afternoon to assess the progress of the fire fighting efforts,” KWS said.

Further, KWS warned members of the public from engaging in activities that may trigger fire in protected areas.

“We call on the public to avoid starting fires near protected areas. WE plan to do another aerial surveillance this afternoon to assess the progress of the fire fighting efforts.”
