Have you ever lived outside Kenya especially before mid 2000s? It was hard then and very expensive to call home unless you had things like Net2Phone which were not reliable unless you had a connection which could handle VOIP.
There is a new service just aimed at the diasporians. It is called sweet. Yaani tamu. Sweet is a new Kenyan phone service aimed at those in the Diaspora (Kenyans or those that have a relationship with Kenya). They go online (www.sweet.co.ke) and sign up to order a Kenyan phone line. This Sweet line can be used anywhere in the world where there is Internet.
The Sweet number that one calls is a Kenyan number with a 020 area code (Nairobi area code) which means that those in Kenya calling the number will call & pay for a local call even if the owner of the number is abroad.
Some of the features are: a Kenyan number in the Diaspora, as low as Kshs 3/= to call this number from Kenyan Networks, it is free to receive calls on Sweet, one can use a Sweet Box (connected to the internet and an analogue telephone) to make & receive calls alternatively one can download an application (Dialers or soft phones) onto their PC and/or mobile phones to make/receive calls, there is a self help center on our website to manage and check all details of your account.
This member self-help center is UserID & password protected.
