The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has directed its party leader, Oburu Oginga, to begin talks with other political parties, starting with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

In a statement released on Monday, January 12, 2026, after a Central Committee meeting held in Kilifi, ODM said the decision was reached after reviewing the party’s political, organisational and strategic position.

“The Committee meeting expressed the intention to initiate structured negotiations with different political formations, beginning with the United Democratic Alliance,” the statement said. “The Party Leader has been mandated to start this process, alongside consultations with party members, leading to a National Delegates Convention.”

The Central Committee noted that the next General Election will be held next year and said the party cannot afford to delay its preparations.

It directed that work should begin immediately to position ODM not only to contest the elections, but also to form the next government. This includes developing policies, strengthening party structures, building coalitions and preparing candidates.

The Committee also discussed the implementation of the party’s Ten-Point Agenda, with special focus on the unresolved issue of compensation for victims of public protests. It noted that courts had declared the proposed Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests unlawful.

As a result, ODM resolved that any compensation funds should be handled through legally recognised institutions, particularly the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).

In addition, the Central Committee received a report from the Auditor General and noted that ODM has once again been praised for maintaining clean financial records for the twentieth year in a row. The party was also commended for being fully compliant with the Political Parties Act, according to findings by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.
