Detectives in Makindu, Makueni County arrested two men suspected of being behind a string of highway motor vehicle thefts.
The suspects are accused of orchestrating robberies targeting vehicles headed to Uganda as well as unregistered cars bearing Kenya Dealers (KD) plates.
In one incident on August 28, 2025, the pair allegedly robbed a black Toyota Harrier with KD plates from a motorist in the Makindu area.
Following their arrest along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, detectives recovered several items, including a set of registration plates (KDR 885Z), three ID cards belonging to different people, five mobile phones, a wheel spanner, and other assorted items.
Such attacks have been on the rise on the highway which prompted a police operation.
Police say the gangs target imported cars without official registration numbers. The operations have led to the arrest of dozens of suspects in the past months.
The cars are usually driven to locations where they have their details tampered with an imposed with fake registration numbers before they are sold to unsuspecting and at times greedy buyers.
The government has been taking measures to address the trend including registering the cars from the points of origin. But the gangs behind the trend are also ahead of the measures and at times beat them to have the cars stolen, registered and sold to the buyers amid the operations.
Meanwhile, a minor was killed in an accident along Rodi Kopany-Ndhiwa Road in Homabay County.
Police said the female minor, aged five, was a pedestrian when the accident happened on Friday afternoon. This was after a salon car veered off the road and hit her.
