A Polish tourist who was on transit to Ethiopia was arrested after he was found distributing bhang to locals at a bus stop in Marsabit Town.

Police said the man was arrested after locals tipped authorities he was distributing sticks which they believed were bhang.

A search on his car saw the recovery of 24 similar sticks, police said.

Police said money of different currency was also recovered from the car. He was detained ahead of planned arraignment.

It is a criminal offence to possess and traffic bhang in Kenya and can attract up to six years in jail.

Elsewhere at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, 192 boxes which were destined for the UK and contained miraa were detained.

The detention was made after the boxes which had been declared to contain passion fruits.

Police said they are investigating the incident. Miraa has been banned in the UK and many European countries.

And detectives in Meru County arrested a 47-year-old man and recovered an illegal firearm following an intelligence-led operation in Mutuati Sub-County.

Police said the suspect was apprehended on March 9, 2026, after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Mutuati and Igembe North launched investigations into reports that he was in possession of an illegal firearm and had been threatening members of the public.

According to police, the matter was first reported on March 8 at Kabachi Police Station by a member of the public who claimed the suspect had been issuing threats to kill.

Preliminary investigations established the suspect had recently been released from prison after serving a 15-year jail term for the murder of his brother, Joel Murungi Mucoka.

Following his arrest, detectives conducted further interrogation and follow-up operations which led the suspect to reveal where he had hidden the weapon. Officers later recovered a Pachet submachine gun loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Police said the firearm and ammunition have been secured as exhibits and will undergo ballistic examination as part of ongoing investigations to determine whether the weapon may have been used in other criminal activities in the area.

The suspect was detained ahead of planned arraignment for charges related to possession of an illegal firearm and issuing threats to kill.

Authorities said investigations are continuing to establish the source of the firearm and whether other suspects may be involved.
