Preparations are complete for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) grassroots elections set to begin Thursday across Kisii County, with party officials expressing confidence in a smooth and secure exercise.
Regional Party Administrator Caleb Ondieki confirmed that all logistical and security arrangements have been finalized. He said the party has received firm assurances from security agencies, coordinated through the County Commissioner, that the process will proceed without disruption.
“Our members should feel safe to come out and participate. Adequate security has been guaranteed,” said Ondieki.
Speaking at Itierio Girls Boarding School during an inspection tour, Ondieki—who will also serve as the County Returning Officer—revealed that election materials had already been distributed to all polling centres.
“All ballot boxes and necessary materials have been dispatched. We are fully prepared for the exercise,” he stated.
The grassroots polls will see at least 20 officials elected at each polling station, in a move aimed at strengthening internal party democracy and solidifying structures at the local level.
Ondieki called on party members to maintain peace and uphold integrity throughout the process, emphasizing the importance of credibility in the elections.
“This is a democratic exercise. We expect members to conduct themselves peacefully and respect the outcome,” he added.
The exercise comes shortly after William Ruto toured the region, a visit widely interpreted as part of efforts to bolster UDA’s influence in Kisii.
Aspirants, including Bernard Nyakenyanya, expressed optimism that the process will be transparent and instrumental in consolidating the party’s grassroots support.
Leaders Welcome Suneka Airstrip Upgrade
Separately, political hopefuls in Bonchari constituency have welcomed the national government’s decision to fund the rehabilitation and expansion of the Suneka Airstrip.
Led by local leader Ogari, they praised President Ruto for prioritizing infrastructure development in the Gusii region, noting that the long-awaited project will enhance economic growth and regional connectivity.
“This project has been on the drawing board for years. We appreciate the decisive steps taken to ensure its implementation,” said Ogari.
The Suneka Airstrip upgrade forms part of a broader government strategy to modernize regional air transport infrastructure and support Kenya’s economic transformation agenda.
