President Uhuru Kenyatta has hailed the Harambee Stars for the historic qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Head of State has also pledged his and government support to ensure the team prepares adequately for the showpiece whose host is yet to be identified.

“Congratulations Harambee Stars for qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. I assure you of my support and that of the Government to facilitate and provide you with the necessary resources to ensure you are well prepared for the task ahead. Hongera!” Mr Kenyatta tweeted.

Stars sailed through for the first time in 15 solid years of trying following a decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to withdraw Sierra Leone from the qualifiers.

Kenya tops Group B of the qualifiers which now only have Ghana and Ethiopia since Sierra Leone is serving a FIFA suspension.

Stars will face Ghana, who have also qualified, in the final qualifying match in March next year to determine the group’s winner.

Cameroon who was to stage the championship was stripped of the rights Friday after failing preparedness test.

A new host will be known before the end of the year.
