Sakaja Pushes for Pay Plan for Community Policing Volunteers

Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson has called for Community Policing Volunteers to be formally recognized and placed on a structured stipend plan, similar to Community Health Promoters (CHPs).

Speaking during the Jukwaa La Usalama Nairobi Edition, Sakaja said the volunteers play a crucial role in neighborhood safety and deserve appreciation through financial support.

“I have an idea. Community policing officers or volunteers should now be included in a plan like the CHPs. CHPs receive Sh3,500 from the county and Sh2,500 from the national government. I believe community policing volunteers should also be appreciated. I will speak to the President, and I am confident this can work,” Sakaja said.

The Governor also revealed that he has submitted a proposal to operationalize the County Policing Authority, a body provided for under the National Police Service Act. The authority, once in place, will include representation from sub-counties, the county assembly, the County Government, and the Inspector General of Police.

“We are sure the Interior CS will consider our proposal,” Sakaja added, noting that the initiative would strengthen collaboration between national and county security agencies.

If adopted, the proposal could see thousands of community policing volunteers benefit from structured stipends while enhancing grassroots security in Nairobi’s neighborhoods.
