Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has unveiled a new chapati-making machine capable of producing up to 2,000 chapatis per hour under the county government’s Dishi na County school feeding programme.

Sakaja said the machine is now operational at the Toi Primary Kitchen, where it will help the county increase the number of chapatis served to learners in public schools across Nairobi.

“The much-awaited chapati-making machine is now up and running at Toi Primary Kitchen, producing up to 2,000 chapatis every hour for our Dishi na County school feeding programme,” Sakaja said.

Sakaja said the programme currently serves 324,000 learners across 230 public schools in Nairobi’s 17 sub-counties.

The county government has also developed a timetable to ensure that every school gets a designated chapati day.

“With 324,000 learners across 230 public schools in all 17 sub-counties, we have put in place a timetable to ensure every school gets its chapati day,” the governor said.

According to Sakaja, Dishi na County has already served more than 85 million hot and nutritious meals to schoolchildren.

The county is now targeting the 100 million-meal milestone as it continues expanding the school feeding programme.

Sakaja said the initiative was designed to ensure that children attend school and concentrate on their studies without the burden of hunger.

“From a programme that started with scepticism to one feeding hundreds of thousands of children every school day, this is about more than numbers—it is about ensuring our children learn without hunger,” he said.

The unveiling of the machine comes more than a year after President William Ruto pledged to support Sakaja’s school feeding programme with a chapati-making machine.

In March 2025, Ruto promised to boost Dishi na County by providing a machine capable of producing up to one million chapatis daily.
