Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

The family and authorities identified the second victim of a murder-suicide incident that involved two Masinde Muliro University (MMUST) students at Maraba area, Kakamega County.

He was identified as Carey Chibokosia, a third-year student pursuing bachelor’s of education and aged 21.

His parents identified him on Wednesday March 11 at the mortuary pending an autopsy.

He is believed to have stabbed and killed his colleague at the university identified as Dariel Jedidah Luvunga before he died by suicide.

Both bodies were found in the same house and the motive is yet to be established, police said.

Police suspect one of the victims fatally stabbed the other before dying by suicide.

Relatives of one of the victims, 21-year-old Luvunga, a third-year student said they last spoke to him on the evening of March 8, 2026.

The following day, repeated attempts to contact Dariel were unsuccessful.

On March 10, the relatives visited the residence and discovered the door locked from the inside, police said.
Peeking through a small opening, they saw someone lying on the floor.

Police were alerted and responded to the scene, forcibly entering the house.

Inside, they found two lifeless bodies, one male adult lying on the floor with multiple injuries to the head and stomach, and another hanging in the bathroom.

The hanging body was confirmed to be Dariel. A blood-stained kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.

Authorities noted that no suicide note was left, and the motive remains unknown.

Both bodies were transported to Kakamega General Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination. The investigation is ongoing. Police said they are yet to establish the motive of the murder-suicide incident.

A crowd gathered at the scene as police moved the bodies to the mortuary.

Such incidents have been on the rise amid efforts to solve them.
