    Tragedy as Expectant Student is Fatally Stabbed in Suspected Love Triangle in Homabay

    A student at Mawego National Polytechnic in, Homa Bay County is on the run after he allegedly stabbed and killed his 20-year-old girlfriend at the same institution.

    Officials said the deceased identified as Sheryl Awino was pregnant at the time of her death on Saturday February 1 morning.

    The murder is linked to love triangle claims, police and colleagues at the institution said.

    Awino, who was a first-year student pursuing a land survey-related course was allegedly killed by her boyfriend who is also a student at the same learning institution.

    Police and health officials said the woman also lost her unborn child after the suspect stabbed her in the abdomen using a kitchen knife.

    Police said preliminary findings show the student was at her hostel until Friday evening when her boyfriend visited her.

    The two are said to have spent the entire night together before commotion was heard in a room where they were on Saturday at 5 am.

    It was then Awino was found bleeding and crying for help.

    The student was rushed to the hospital with a wound on her abdomen where she succumbed.

    It is not clear how old the pregnancy was. The unborn baby also died.

    Rachuonyo North Police Commander Lydia Parteyie said police are looking for the suspect for questioning.

    She said they are yet to establish the motive of the murder.

    She told the suspect to surrender to authorities for questioning and further processing.

    The body of the woman was moved to a local mortuary pending autopsy.

    And police are investigating an incident where a 27-year-old man was stabbed to death by a student of Asumbi Teachers Training College (TTC) during a physical fight over a form four female student.

    Police said the incident happened in Ongogo Tir village and that Boas Owino died as he was being rushed to Homa bay Referral Hospital after the suspect stabbed him in an argument over the said female student.

    Police said the suspect was arrested and detained at the Mbita police station.

    The body was preserved at a local mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.

    Cases of murder have been on the rise in the area amid calls for parties to solve their differences amicably.

    Police say most cases have been solved or the matters are pending in courts.
