Sunderland Thrash West Ham 3–0 In Premier League Comeback

Sunderland announced their return to the Premier League in style on Saturday after defeating West Ham United 3–0 in an impressive performance at the London Stadium.

The newly promoted side — back in the top flight after several years — silenced critics who doubted their ability to compete at this level. They dominated the second half, scoring two powerful headers before sealing their victory in stoppage time.

Eliezer Mayenda opened the scoring in the 61st minute after rising to head in a fine cross from Omar Alderete. Defender Dan Ballard then made it 2–0 with another headed goal just 12 minutes later.

Substitute Wilson Isidor came off the bench to add a third goal in the dying minutes, beating West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen with ease.

Led by new captain Granit Xhaka, Sunderland looked well-organised and dangerous on the counter-attack. Midfielder Habib Diarra continuously troubled West Ham with his direct runs and strong transition play.

The victory puts Sunderland at the top of the Premier League table after the opening weekend.

For West Ham however, it was a poor start to the season under manager Graham Potter. Despite having 64% possession, the Hammers created very few chances and managed just 11 shots — none of real quality.

Former Premier League striker and pundit Clinton Morrison, speaking on Soccer Saturday, said: “West Ham are in trouble this season. They need new signings. They’re struggling.”
