Police in Mombasa are investigating a theft incident in which more than Sh2.5 million was stolen from a locked vehicle parked outside Aga Khan Hospital.

The complainant, a resident of Kizingo and proprietor of City Motors showroom along Moi Avenue, had driven his black Toyota Yaris to the hospital to donate blood to his ailing sister.

He reportedly parked and locked the vehicle before entering the facility on Friday.

Upon returning, he discovered that unknown persons had broken into the vehicle through the rear right-hand side window.

The suspects allegedly stole a bag containing Sh2,506,300, which the complainant said was proceeds from motor vehicle sales collected over the previous two days.

Police officers visited the scene and commenced investigations.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel documented the scene and collected evidence that may assist in identifying the perpetrators.

No arrests had been made by the time of the report, and investigations into the theft are ongoing.

Police said the thieves may have had prior information on the cash and trailed him from his place of work. A team handling the case was reviewing security footages at the scene and on the roads as part of the probe.

Such incidents have been common in major towns with investigations revealing some of the thieves trail their targets from banking halls and other social places before striking.

Police have since busted some of the cartels in the business and prosecuted them.

The investigations revealed some of the gangs camp in banking halls to monitor transactions before striking their targets far away from the scenes.

And a 25-year-old man was arrested in Migori after police recovered a toy pistol that closely resembled a firearm during an intelligence-led operation.

According to police, a team was conducting an operation along the Migori–Ngege Bypass in Suna East Sub-County on Friday afternoon when they spotted a suspect with what appeared to be a pistol tucked into his waist.

The officers moved in and intercepted the suspect. A search conducted on him led to the recovery of a toy pistol resembling a real firearm, which had been holstered on his waist.
