A security guard was killed after a gang armed with a rifle and machetes raided a gold leaching site in Nyatechi Village, Kuria West, Migori County, in the early hours of Friday.

The incident occurred at about 1:50 a.m. on September 18, 2026, at a leaching site, police said.

According to police, eight men invaded the facility intending to carry out a robbery.

One of the attackers was armed with a rifle, while the others carried machetes.

The watchmen detected the gang’s movement and raised an alarm, prompting the gunman to fire several shots.

One of the guards, identified as David Kimori, 50, was confronted by the attackers and suffered deep machete wounds to the head and upper left arm.

Police officers responded to the scene and rushed the injured guard to Oasis Hospital in Kehancha Township.

He was later referred to Migori Life Care Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

His body was transferred to the Kehancha Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

The gang fled the scene on two motorcycles whose registration numbers were not captured.

During a follow-up search of the scene, police recovered two spent 7.62mm cartridges, which were preserved as exhibits as investigations continued.

Police are pursuing the suspects, who remain at large.

The incidents where gangs raid carbon leaches have been on the rise amid efforts to address the trend.

And a man in his mid-20s was found dead with visible injuries on his head and legs in the Township area near the chicken market in Kakamega County.

The body was discovered on Friday, September 18, 2026, in Sheywe Sub-location, Sichirai Location.

Police officers visited the scene and found the unidentified man lying face down.

According to the police report, the deceased had visible injuries to his head and legs. Preliminary information indicated that a man identified as Amboko allegedly seriously assaulted him during the night. The suspect had not been arrested and was reported to be at large.

The scene was processed and documented by Crime Scene Investigation personnel.

The body was later moved to the Kakamega County General and Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation pending an autopsy.

Police investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and locate the suspect.
