West Pokot County has the lowest number of people owning mobile phones and using the internet, a new report shows.

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) 2023/2024 Kenya Housing Survey, only 29% of people in West Pokot own a mobile phone, while just 9.1% use the internet.

In contrast, Nairobi leads the country with 67.7% mobile phone ownership and 64.7% internet usage. Other counties with high mobile ownership include Kirinyaga (65%), Nyandarua (63.9%), Murang’a (62.3%), and Kiambu (62.1%).

Counties with low mobile ownership rates after West Pokot include Turkana (29.4%), Marsabit (34.8%), Tana River (35.5%), and Samburu (36.8%).

The top counties for internet usage are Nairobi (64.7%), Kiambu (54%), Nyeri (50.1%), Mombasa (46.9%), and Uasin Gishu (35%). On the lower end are Garissa (16.5%), Marsabit (16.3%), Tana River (15.5%), Turkana (12.7%), and West Pokot (9.1%).

The survey also found that people in urban areas are more likely to own mobile phones than those in rural areas, with men leading in ownership. Overall, at least 35% of Kenya’s population uses the internet, with men also dominating in computer usage.

The age group most active online is between 25 and 34 years, while those aged 85 and above are the least likely to use the internet.
