    Don Adams was born Donald Yarmy on April 13, 1923, in New York City. He grew up in a culturally diverse household, with Irish-American roots from his mother and Hungarian-Jewish heritage from his father.

    Raised primarily in his mother’s Catholic faith, Adams shared his upbringing with his siblings, including his brother Dick and sister Gloria.

    Education

    Adams attended DeWitt Clinton High School but left before graduating. Following the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

    During his service, he was deployed to the Pacific and took part in the Battle of Guadalcanal. He later contracted blackwater fever, a severe form of malaria, which required more than a year of hospitalization in New Zealand.

    After recovering, Adams returned to the United States, where he served as a drill instructor before being discharged in 1945.

    Early Career in Comedy and Television

    After his military service, Adams pursued a career in comedy. His early years were marked by various jobs, including performing stand-up routines and working as a commercial artist.

    His breakthrough came in 1954 when he appeared on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts, where his comedic act gained national attention. He later became a regular on The Steve Allen Show.

    He also starred in The Bill Dana Show, which helped establish his reputation as a comedic actor.

    Breakthrough with “Get Smart”

    Adams achieved widespread fame with his role as Maxwell Smart in Get Smart, created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry.

    The show, which parodied spy dramas, became a major hit and ran for five seasons. Adams’s portrayal of the bumbling secret agent earned him multiple Emmy Awards and solidified his place in television history.

    Following the success of Get Smart, Adams continued working steadily in television. He starred in series such as:

    • The Partners
    • Check It Out!

    He also gained recognition as a voice actor, lending his voice to several popular animated characters, including:

    • Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales
    • Inspector Gadget
    • Pepper Ann

    His role as Inspector Gadget became particularly iconic, introducing him to a new generation of viewers.

    Later Career

    In later years, Adams remained active in television through guest appearances on shows like The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.

    He also hosted the game show Don Adams’ Screen Test, further diversifying his career and income streams.

    Personal Life and Death

    Don Adams was married three times and had seven children. His first marriage was to singer Adelaide Efantis, from whom he adopted the stage surname “Adams.”

    He passed away on September 25, 2005, at the age of 82 after battling lymphoma and a lung infection. His funeral was attended by close friends and collaborators, reflecting the strong relationships he built throughout his career.
