The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has announced that buyers of police-auctioned vehicles may qualify for an eight-year waiver on the importation and registration age limit.

According to the Kenya Standard Code of Practice for Inspection of Road Vehicles, motor vehicles older than eight years from their first registration are generally prohibited from importation and registration.

However, KEBS may recommend a waiver to the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry, provided applicants meet the Waiver Evaluation Technical Criteria (WETC).

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, KEBS confirmed that the WETC guidelines, available on www.kebs.org, outline the criteria for evaluating police-auctioned vehicles eligible for the waiver.

To qualify, the vehicles must already be in Kenya, remain unclaimed, and be in the custody of the National Police Service.

The requirements for waiver consideration include a formal application letter, a Multi-Agency pre-auction report, and a Gazette Notice listing the vehicle for auction.

The notice must specify which vehicles are roadworthy and which are designated for scrapping, in line with the multi-agency pre-auction report.

Additional requirements include a court order authorizing the auction, the auctioneer’s license and certificate of sale, a tape lift from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and an Interpol clearance.

“Consequently, we wish to inform the public that KEBS will only consider and recommend to the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry a waiver of the age limit for police-auctioned vehicles that meet the requirements specified above,” KEBS stated in the notice.
