Popular public transport Sacco, Super Metro, has been ordered to sack 269 drivers before it can resume operations. This is one of eight strict conditions issued by the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB).
According to the ruling delivered on Monday, April 14, Super Metro must immediately disengage the drivers listed in a document marked “SPM7” as part of a case brought against the Sacco.
“The appellant (Super Metro) shall immediately disengage 269 drivers as per the list marked ‘SPM7’,” reads part of the tribunal’s orders.
The directive was issued just hours before Super Metro announced that it would suspend its services for three days to comply with the new conditions.
In addition to the 269 drivers, the Sacco has also been instructed to take 42 drivers who were found to have overspeeding violations to the Likoni Driver Test Centre for retesting.
The board also directed Super Metro to present eight vehicles with speed limiter issues for inspection at the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre.
In addition, 31 other vehicles with compliance concerns must be brought in for reevaluation, and updated inspection reports submitted to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
Super Metro must also submit the minutes and attendance list from its road safety sensitisation sessions with all its drivers to the NTSA Director of Road Safety.
TLAB also reinstated the orders issued on March 18, which had earlier suspended Super Metro’s operations. The Sacco will not be allowed to operate until it has fully complied with the eight conditions.
“The appellant shall forthwith cease operations pending further orders upon confirmation of compliance with the terms of the orders herein,” the Board ruled.
In a statement released on Monday, Super Metro confirmed its decision to suspend operations for three days as it works to meet the remaining requirements. The Sacco said it had already fulfilled 90 percent of the conditions issued in March.
“Following a hearing with the Transport Licensing Appeals Board today, the Board has directed Super Metro Limited to suspend operations for the next three days to finalise the remaining compliance measures,” the Sacco said.
“Super Metro Limited fully respects the decisions of the TLAB and the court. We are working diligently to address the outstanding compliance issues within the stipulated timeframe and will resume operations as soon as we receive approval from the relevant authorities.”
The case will be mentioned again on April 17 to check whether the Sacco has complied with the directives and to give further instructions.
