Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has presented a petition in the Senate on behalf of residents of Korogocho, who are facing eviction following the declaration of the Nairobi River Corridor as a Special Planning Area by the Nairobi City County Government.
While addressing the Senate, Senator Sifuna said the residents are not against efforts to clean up the environment but want to be treated fairly in the process.
“The residents of Korogocho are not against development or environmental restoration. However, they deserve fairness, dignity, and a seat at the table where decisions about their lives are made,” he said.
The petition, signed by over 30 affected residents, highlights several concerns including lack of public participation, cases of intimidation during evictions, pending compensation issues, and the absence of proper plans to resettle those who have already been evicted.
“It is unacceptable that a community is evicted without adequate notice, public participation, or clarity on compensation. We are dealing with human beings who have lived in these areas for decades,” Sifuna told the Senate.
Residents say their attempts to engage both the Nairobi City County Government and the County Executive Committee have not yielded any results.
They are now calling on the Senate to intervene and ensure that evictions are carried out in a humane way, affected families are compensated, and future planning includes proper community involvement.
The Senate has referred the petition to the Committee on Land, Environment and Natural Resources for review and further action.
