The government is pushing local training institutions to start teaching German as part of their courses to prepare Kenyans for job opportunities abroad, especially in Germany.
This came up during a meeting between the National Assembly Committee on Labour and the State Department for Labour and Skills Development.
The committee, chaired by Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga, met with Principal Secretary Shadrack Mwadime to discuss a proposed migration and mobility agreement between Kenya and Germany.
The agreement is aimed at helping skilled Kenyans—those who have completed vocational training or university degrees—get employment opportunities in Germany. PS Mwadime said the move is part of the government’s plan to open up new economic opportunities for young people.
“For the first time, we are going to send skilled Kenyans abroad to tap into job opportunities existing in foreign countries,” said Mwadime, noting that the partnership will also support the exchange of information on job markets, student training, and the protection of workers’ rights.
However, language emerged as a major concern during the meeting.
MP Chonga pointed out that many Kenyans speak only English, which could be a barrier in Germany, where German is the main language.
“Most Kenyans only speak English, and this could be a big disadvantage in getting job opportunities in Germany,” Chonga said.
In response, PS Mwadime said the government is already working on a solution.
“Plans are underway to train interested Kenyans in the German language, and we are engaging local training institutions to incorporate German in their curricula,” he said.
He also advised Kenyans to be cautious when seeking jobs abroad and warned them against falling prey to rogue employment agencies.
“Despite efforts to enlighten Kenyans, some still fall victim to unfortunate incidents,” Mwadime added.
The government hopes the new agreement with Germany will offer Kenyan professionals a clear and safe path to work abroad, while boosting the country’s economic development through foreign employment.
