Derrick Green is an American musician and vocalist renowned for his powerful, versatile voice and long-standing role as the frontman of the legendary Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura.
Born Derrick Leon Green on January 20, 1971, in Cleveland, Ohio, he has brought a fresh energy and hardcore-influenced style to one of the most influential metal acts in the world since joining in 1997.
Siblings
Green is the youngest of three children born to Friendly Green, an electrician, and Gloria Green, a music teacher.
The family moved from inner-city Cleveland to the suburb of Shaker Heights when Derrick was seven years old.
His older brother is Gregory Lawrence Green, and his older sister is Renée Green, a respected writer, artist, and filmmaker.
Career
Green’s career in music began in the hardcore and punk scenes of Cleveland during his teenage years.
At the age of 14, he started attending shows, and by 15 he had joined the band Outface as a vocalist, contributing to their energetic mix of rock, metal, punk, and ska elements.
The band released a full-length album titled Friendly Green in 1992 and toured extensively across the United States and Europe.
Green later participated in other projects, including brief stints with bands like Alpha Jerk and the side project Música Diablo.
His big break came in 1997 when Sepultura, following the departure of original vocalist Max Cavalera, sought a new singer.

Recommended through industry connections, Green auditioned by recording vocals over a demo track that would become “Choke” on the album Against.
He traveled to Brazil, bonded with the remaining members, and officially joined the band, marking the start of a new era.
His first album with Sepultura, Against (1998), introduced his raw, aggressive vocal approach while maintaining the band’s groove-heavy sound.
Over the subsequent decades, Green has co-written much of the band’s material starting from the album Nation (2001) onward, helping shape releases such as Roorback, Dante XXI, A-Lex, Kairos, The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart, Machine Messiah, and Quadra.
He has also contributed rhythm guitar and percussion at times and has been instrumental in keeping Sepultura active through extensive world tours and festival appearances.
Outside Sepultura, Green has explored solo work, collaborations, and guest vocals with acts like Biohazard and Integrity, while maintaining side projects that reflect his diverse influences.
Accolades
Under his tenure, Sepultura has released multiple critically acclaimed studio albums and live recordings, toured relentlessly, and performed at major events including Rock in Rio.
Music videos directed in collaboration with the band, such as the cover of U2’s “Bullet the Blue Sky,” received awards at the Brazil MTV Music Awards for best photography, editing, and direction.
Green himself has been recognized for his contributions to metal and his ability to evolve the band’s sound while honoring its roots.
His longevity with Sepultura, now spanning more albums and years than the Max Cavalera era, has solidified his status as a dedicated and resilient frontman who has helped bridge the band’s thrash and groove metal heritage with modern influences.
