    Early Life

Alison Berns was born on May 26, 1954, in Newton Centre, Massachusetts.

Raised in a Jewish household, Berns grew up in an environment where Transcendental Meditation played an important role — a detail that later connected her to Stern. She eventually attended Boston University, where she studied social work.

It was during college in the early 1970s that she first met Howard Stern.

How Alison Berns Met Howard Stern

Alison and Howard met while both were students at Boston University.

At the time, Stern was working on a student film centered around Transcendental Meditation and cast Berns in the project. Their connection quickly turned romantic.

In his memoir, Private Parts, Stern later wrote that he knew within a week of dating Berns that he would marry her.

The couple tied the knot on June 4, 1978, at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Massachusetts — years before Stern became one of America’s most influential radio personalities.

Alison Berns During Howard Stern’s Rise to Fame

Much of Alison Berns net worth is linked to her long marriage during Stern’s explosive rise in entertainment.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Berns occasionally appeared on The Howard Stern Show, where listeners got rare glimpses into the couple’s marriage, parenting style, and family life.

As Stern transformed from a local radio host into a nationally syndicated media figure, Berns remained largely private but occasionally participated in projects connected to his brand.

    She appeared in:

    • Negligee and Underpants
    • U.S. Open Sores
    • Private Parts (1997), where she played herself

Despite public curiosity surrounding Stern’s increasingly controversial image, Berns was often seen as the grounding force behind the scenes.

Alison Berns and Howard Stern’s Family

The couple welcomed three daughters during their marriage:

    • Emily Beth Stern (born 1983)
    • Deborah Jennifer Stern (born 1986)
    • Ashley Jade Stern (born 1993)

Family life became a recurring topic on Stern’s radio show, with Berns often referenced in discussions about parenting and marriage.

Even during Stern’s peak fame, however, Berns continued working in the mental health field rather than pursuing celebrity status.

    Divorce

Howard and Alison separated in October 1999, ending more than two decades of marriage.

At the time of their separation, Howard Stern’s net worth reportedly stood at around $80 million, while he earned approximately $20 million annually through his radio empire.

Although the exact details of their divorce settlement were never publicly revealed, reports suggested Berns received a substantial financial arrangement. Stern later stated publicly that he wanted to ensure she remained financially secure.

The divorce was finalized in 2001 and was reportedly handled privately to protect their children.

That same year, Berns remarried David Scott Simon, who is not connected to the Simon Property Group despite occasional speculation online.

    Alison Berns Real Estate

In 1986, Howard and Alison purchased a sprawling 54-room mansion in Old Westbury, New York, for approximately $702,000.

The estate became symbolic of Stern’s growing wealth and was often referenced during radio broadcasts.

Following the divorce, Stern transferred ownership of the property to Berns. She later sold the mansion in 2003 for approximately $1.62 million.

Years later, in 2015, Berns and her husband purchased a home in Delray Beach, Florida, for around $1.54 million, signaling her move away from New York and the media spotlight.

    Life After Howard Stern

Unlike many celebrity ex-spouses, Alison Berns chose an intentionally private lifestyle after her divorce.

She reportedly continued working as a licensed clinical social worker and psychoanalyst, maintaining a professional identity outside entertainment even during Stern’s peak years.

Her second marriage has remained largely private, and she has spent much of the last two decades away from public attention.
