    Early Life

Angela Laverne Brown was born on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina.

Stone was introduced to music through the church. She sang in her childhood church choir, where she developed the powerful vocal style that would later become one of her trademarks.

Her professional music career began in 1979 when she formed The Sequence with Gwendolyn Chisholm and Cheryl Cook.

The group became one of the early successful female rap acts. Their song “Funk You Up” became an important early hip-hop record and demonstrated Stone’s ability to work across different musical styles.

The success of The Sequence gave Stone valuable experience at a time when hip-hop was still developing as a commercial genre.

    The Sequence and Early Career

The Sequence signed with Sugar Hill Records and became associated with the early commercial growth of hip-hop.

“Funk You Up” became their signature song and helped establish the group as an important act in the early rap era.

After The Sequence eventually disbanded, Stone continued developing her career as a singer and songwriter.

She later became involved with other musical projects, including Mantronix and Vertical Hold.

    Vertical Hold and R&B Success

In the early 1990s, Stone joined the R&B group Vertical Hold.

The group released its self-titled debut album in 1993. One of its notable songs was “Seems You’re Much Too Busy,” which helped showcase Stone’s evolving vocal abilities.

Her work with Vertical Hold also positioned her for a future as a solo R&B artist.

Stone continued working as a songwriter and background vocalist before eventually launching her solo career.

    Solo Career and Neo-Soul Breakthrough

Stone released her debut solo album, Black Diamond, in 1999.

The project arrived during the rise of neo-soul, a movement that brought classic soul influences into contemporary R&B. Stone became closely associated with the genre alongside artists such as D’Angelo, Erykah Badu and Maxwell.

Her deep voice and mature songwriting helped distinguish her from many of the younger R&B artists dominating mainstream music at the time.

Stone’s second album, Mahogany Soul, followed in 2001 and became one of the most important projects of her career.

    “Wish I Didn’t Miss You”

One of Angie Stone’s biggest hits was “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” released from Mahogany Soul.

The song sampled the O’Jays’ classic “Back Stabbers” and became a major favorite among R&B audiences.

Its combination of classic soul influences and contemporary production reflected Stone’s musical identity.

The success of Mahogany Soul strengthened her position as one of neo-soul’s leading female voices.

    Later Albums and Music Career

Stone continued releasing music throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

Her albums included Stone Love in 2004, The Art of Love & War in 2007 and Rich Girl in 2012.

She continued exploring themes of love, relationships, heartbreak, resilience and personal growth.

Unlike artists whose careers depended heavily on a single period of mainstream success, Stone remained active across multiple generations of R&B.

Her later albums included Dream in 2015 and Full Circle in 2019.

She also continued performing live for audiences who had followed her career since the 1990s.

    Songwriting and Collaborations

Stone’s talents extended beyond her own recordings.

She worked with numerous major artists throughout her career, including D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiq and Stevie Wonder.

Her relationship with D’Angelo was also significant to her personal and professional life. The two collaborated musically, and Stone was involved in the development of his early work.

Stone was also credited as a songwriter on some of D’Angelo’s music, demonstrating her contribution to the neo-soul movement beyond her own solo recordings.

    Acting Career

Angie Stone also built a career in acting.

She appeared in the 2003 musical comedy film The Fighting Temptations, which starred Beyoncé and Cuba Gooding Jr.

Her move into acting gave her another source of income and introduced her to audiences outside the R&B world.

Stone also appeared on television, including reality programs such as Celebrity Fit Club and R&B Divas.

Her appearances on R&B Divas gave viewers a closer look at her life and career while allowing her to mentor younger performers.

    Personal Life

Stone’s personal life attracted attention throughout her career, particularly her relationship with D’Angelo.

The two welcomed a son, Michael D’Angelo Archer II, in 1998.

Stone later became a mother to another child, Diamond, from a different relationship.

She was generally open about her experiences with relationships, motherhood and the challenges of working in the entertainment industry.

Her willingness to discuss personal experiences also became part of the authenticity that defined her music.

    Angie Stone’s Health Struggles

Stone also spoke publicly about living with Type 2 diabetes.

Her health journey became part of her broader public story, particularly as she continued performing and working in the entertainment industry.

Despite personal and professional challenges, she remained active in music and continued connecting with audiences.

    Angie Stone’s Death

Angie Stone died on March 1, 2025, at the age of 63 following a car accident.

Her death brought an end to a career that had lasted more than 40 years.

Stone had remained active as a performer and recording artist, making her death particularly significant to fans of R&B, soul and neo-soul.
