Ardie Suemalo Savea is a New Zealand professional rugby union player known for his explosive athleticism, powerful ball-carrying, defensive intensity, and leadership as a loose forward.
Born on 14 October 1993 in Wellington to Samoan parents Masina and Lina Savea, he grew up in a humble household in areas such as Berhampore and Island Bay.
The family faced financial challenges, with his parents making significant sacrifices, including relying on public transport for the boys’ early rugby commitments, yet providing strong support and values centered on hard work and family.
Savea attended Rongotai College, where he captained the First XV and served as head boy.
He plays primarily as a flanker or number 8 and has represented the All Blacks extensively since his debut.
Siblings
Ardie’s has an older brother, Julian Savea, born on 7 August 1990.
Julian is a former All Blacks winger renowned for his powerful running and try-scoring ability.
The brothers share Samoan heritage, with family ties to villages including Siumu and Luatuanu’u, and they grew up immersed in rugby through their local club Oriental-Rongotai (Ories).
They first played together as children around 2004, when Ardie was about nine and Julian thirteen.
The pair became one of the sets of siblings to represent the All Blacks, playing together for the Hurricanes and the national team.

Notable moments include scoring tries in the same Test against South Africa in 2016 (the first All Blacks brothers to do so in one match) and later reuniting at Moana Pasifika.
Career
Savea began his senior career with Wellington in the provincial competition in 2012, making an immediate impact with strong performances and tries.
He debuted for the Hurricanes in Super Rugby in 2013 and remained a cornerstone of the franchise through 2023, accumulating 131 appearances and contributing to their 2016 Super Rugby title.
Early on he also featured in New Zealand sevens and captained age-grade sides, including New Zealand Under-20.
In 2013 he toured with the All Blacks as a non-playing apprentice alongside his brother.
He made his Test debut for the All Blacks against Wales in June 2016 at Eden Park and quickly established himself as a regular, versatile back-rower capable of playing openside, blindside, or number 8.
He has captained the Hurricanes (from around 2021), Wellington, and the All Blacks on multiple occasions, including becoming the 70th Test captain and leading in significant matches such as the historic 100th Test against South Africa.
After the 2023 Rugby World Cup he spent time with the Kobe Steelers in Japan Rugby League One before joining Moana Pasifika in Super Rugby Pacific from 2025, where he reunited with Julian and helped elevate the team’s performances.
By mid-2020s he had surpassed 100 All Blacks caps, scoring numerous tries and remaining a key figure under successive coaches.
Accolades
Savea was named World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year in 2023, becoming the first New Zealander to win the award since Richie McCaw in 2012; he had previously been a nominee in 2019.
He has collected multiple All Blacks Player of the Year awards (including in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025) and the Kelvin R. Tremain Memorial Trophy for New Zealand Rugby Player of the Year on several occasions.
At Super Rugby level he earned Player of the Year honours, including recognition in 2019 and the inaugural Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year in 2025 during his standout Moana Pasifika campaign.
Team successes include the 2016 Super Rugby title with the Hurricanes and multiple Rugby Championship titles with the All Blacks.
He contributed to New Zealand’s run to the 2023 Rugby World Cup final (runners-up) and has received further honours such as selection in Japan Rugby League One Best XV sides and earlier age-grade awards.
