Police in Athi River are investigating a robbery with violence incident in which armed criminals made away with Sh1.7 million and several mobile phones from a Safaricom super agent.
The incident was reported at Athi River Police Station shortly after midnight on Wednesday.
According to police, a Safaricom super agent operating within the Devki area of Ngimu Location, had closed her business at around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and headed home accompanied by her employee, in a silver Toyota Fielder.
Upon arriving at the main gate of their residential court in Ngimu Estate, the woman noticed that the person opening the gate was not the regular watchman. However, she proceeded into the compound and drove towards her residence.
Police said that as her employee alighted to ring the doorbell, two men armed with a firearm suddenly emerged and confronted Mutua, demanding money.
The robbers stole Sh1.7 million in cash and several mobile phones, including Huawei, Xiaomi and Smart handsets, before fleeing the scene.
Preliminary investigations established that the gang had overpowered the compound’s watchman and a caretaker before the robbery. The two were reportedly tied up, allowing the suspects to gain access to the premises undetected.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
Police have launched investigations to identify and apprehend the suspects, with detectives exploring the possibility that the attackers may have had prior knowledge of the victim’s movements and the cash she was carrying.
The robbery adds to growing concerns over targeted attacks against mobile money agents and business operators handling large amounts of cash.
Teams of police are investigating the incidents.
And police have recovered a lorry that was violently stolen from its driver in Kiambu County and arrested one suspect in connection with the robbery.
The recovery follows a carjacking and robbery with violence incident reported at Karibaribi Police Post on June 7, 2026, in which a driver was ambushed by individuals posing as customers seeking transport services.
According to police, the driver of an Isuzu FVZ lorry had travelled from Kiganjo to Jomoko area after receiving a call from purported clients who wanted to hire the vehicle to transport construction materials to Eldoret.
The suspects allegedly directed him to the Madaraka area near Maryhill High School in Karibaribi, where the loading was said to be taking place. Upon arrival, two additional men joined the group and, as discussions on the transport deal continued, one of the suspects reportedly produced a pistol and subdued the driver.
Police said the victim was tied with ropes, blindfolded and his mouth sealed with adhesive tape before being bundled into the lorry cabin. He was later driven to a secluded area and abandoned in a thicket as the suspects escaped with the vehicle and his mobile phone.
Investigators received a breakthrough on June 9 after a concealed magnetic tracking device installed on the vehicle was activated revealing the lorry’s location at Maili Nne in Uasin Gishu County.
Working with officers from Baharini Police Station, police traced and recovered the vehicle. Investigators established that the lorry had been repainted and its registration number altered from KDT 461N to KDP 802N in an apparent attempt to conceal its identity.
During the operation, officers arrested the driver found in possession of the vehicle. However, his alleged accomplice escaped on foot and is being pursued by police.
A bunch of keys, including the vehicle’s ignition key, was recovered during the operation. The recovered lorry has been detained at a police station as investigations continue.
Police are pursuing additional suspects believed to have participated in the violent robbery and are expected to subject the recovered vehicle to further forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigations.
