Police were Friday granted an application to detain three suspects for 14 days in connection with the murder of a businessman during a scuffle in a club in Kisii Town. This is after businessman Jeremiah Mogaka Nyamweya, 37 succumbed to injuries he sustained during the scuffle on March 10. African Union Executive Council Friday unanimously adopted a critical decision that it is the turn of the Eastern Africa region to submit candidates for the position of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).  The elections will be held in February 2025. Murder convict Joseph Jowie Irungu Friday filed a notice of appeal against his conviction and death sentence over the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani. “Take notice that Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie appeals to the Court of Appeal against the decisions of the Honourable Lady Justice Grace Nzioka whereby the Appellant was convicted of Murder and sentenced to death on 13th March, 2024,” read the notice by his advocate Andrew Muge. The US Embassy Friday March 15 warned its citizens of increased crime rates in Nairobi estates. In an advisory the Embassy warned its citizens residing in Nairobi to take caution even as they go about their business. “There are reports of increased criminal activity in residential areas of Nairobi,” the Embassy said. “Incidents include crimes of opportunity such as purse and phone snatching,” the advisory reads. The Embassy, however, noted the Kenya government is taking measures to deploy more police in high crime areas. Multi agency teams are investigating an incident in which a businessman was brutally shot and killed outside his shop in Bura East, Garissa County. The businessman was shot at close range in the head and died on the spot in the March 13 incident, police said. A Nairobi-based businessman is nursing wounds in hospital after he was roughed up by a group of mourners at a charged funeral event in Kajuok village, Siaya County. Police said Leonard Ochieng Nyapere is a licensed gun holder. He was attending a funeral event of his sister-in-law on March 12 when a commotion broke out, police and witnesses said. 18 Ethiopians were Thursday arrested in a village in Wajir for being in the country. They were arrested in Korondile Township days after they had arrived there from the Kenya-Ethiopia border. They told police they had been ferried there by a smuggler who was to pick them for Nairobi and later to Tanzania and South Africa. The group said they are looking for jobs in South Africa. A high court in Japan on Thursday said the country’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.  This is a matter that has divided lower levels of the judiciary and put the conservative government at odds with shifting public opinion. The National Assembly Cohesion and Equal Opportunities Committee will conduct an inquiry into employment of 1,406 Revenue Service Assistants by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). The committee chaired by Yussuf Haji reached this resolution following reports that 133 recruits were dropped after they were subjected to HIV and pregnancy tests among other insubstantial reasons. This, the Committee says, is in contravention of the law. A Mombasa court Thursday declined to grant bond to Pastor Paul Mackenzie and 38 others, who are parents of children victims rescued from the Shakahola forest. The Tononoka Children’s Court Principal Magistrate Nelly Chepchirchir ruled that the prosecution has advanced compelling reasons against the accused persons to interfere with children witnesses. Kenyans can breathe easy after the government reduced Super petrol prices by Sh7.21 despite higher landing costs.  The prices of diesel dropped by Sh5.09 and that of kerosene by Sh4.49. In the monthly review issued by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), landed cost for super petrol increased by 5.6 per cent to $703 compared to last month. That of diesel dropped by 0.76 per cent to $722.49 while that of kerosene increased by 1.65 per cent to $730.50.
