A police officer was on Thursday arrested in Makueni County following reports that he participated in the anti-government protests staged on Wednesday. The officer identified as Evans Otieno based at Emali Police Station is accused of being part of the rioters that hurled stones at the station. Anti-government protestors on Thursday set ablaze three vehicles along Joseph Kang’ethe Road in Kibra during a confrontation with police officers. The demonstrators also broke into shops and looted property. Local youths said they suspect some of the attackers were strangers. Amnesty International Kenya said Thursday it condemns the continued use of force against protestors. The continued attacks, use of excessive, unnecessary and unlawful force, including lethal force, is leading to increased deaths and injuries of both adults and children, Amnesty’s Houghton Irungu said. He said since the March 2023 protests, Amnesty has noted at least 30 cases of police killings of protesters. “They include March 20th and 27th protests (12 killings), Saba Saba protest (12 killings) and yesterday’s July 19th (6 killings). The Court of Appeal Court on Thursday declined to grant interim orders staying the ruling of Justice Mugure Thande which suspended implementation of Finance Act, 2023. A gang believed to be al Shabaab terrorists raided a construction site in Balambala, Garissa County and stole two hydraulic motor vehicle jerks and several liters of diesel. The gang which drove into the yard run by a Chinese construction company was armed with rifles in the Tuesday morning incident, police and witnesses said.
